I'd suggest Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer novels.  They lack some of the
baroque subtelty of Raymond Chandler, but the period is right and they
have a nasty edge to them.  You can pick up omnibus editions pretty
cheaply.

And it probably goes without saying that you'd get a lot from any of James
Ellroy's period pieces.
