There are a lot of things that don't necessarily need
to be avoided, just retooled. With the skin mags I
don't see why you wouldn't have the foundations for
the future WECHBY. And why not have the characters run
into people before things get going. Maybe they meet a
5 year old Alex Abel who shines shoes. You know set
the seeds for things that will be. You can make the
players be Sleepers laying the smack down on New York.
I had been toying around for a long time with running
basically a TNI game set in the late 50s early 60s.
But instead of answering to Alex Abel, the players
would report to Howard Hughes in his Vegas base where
he pisses in a milk jug and summons Bugsy's demon.
As far as detective stuff. As already stated: Mickey
Spillane and James Elroy. Then we have John D.
MacDonald, Richard S. Prather, G.G. Fickling, Wade
Miller, David Dodge and tons of other stuff. I'm sure
you find a collection of period stuff at the library,
just skip the early stuff like, or read it anyway.
Hammett is just as valid in 1940 as he is in 1956. On
tv you've got Westerns (avenging cowboy hero) and
Dragnet and Highway Patrol. Lat 50s brings us Perry
Mason, Richard Diamond, Peter Gunn, and 77 Sunset
Strip. Noir movies still totally valid--just watch the
later ones like Kiss Me, Deadly and Touch of Evil.
You could give every session and approriately 50s
trashy paperback title, you know--Confessions of a
Hophead, I Was A Cult's Sex Slave.
And be sure to throw in scary Soviets, crazed
motorcycle gangs, reefer madness, comic books, and the
Korean War, and someone being the godwalker of THE
TEENAGER...
