5. He never had a family. He was actually created in a manner similar to a 
non-entity as a byproduct of some sort of mass psychic-feedback relevant to 
the character's nature. (For instance, if the character wants to be an 
archetype of the masterless man, he was created because enough people felt 
oppressed or otherwise emasculated.) The whole story of the dead family is 
just the universe's way of slipping him in as easily as possible. 
(Alternatively, the Universe had to actually destroy a happy family in order 
to take back enough energy to make an entirely new being).
