For me, the problem solves itself. The Compte is a
walking archetype. If he goes down, someone else
starts channeling the First and Last Man, re-assuming
his role in the cosmos with his previous memories and
psyche largely intact.

I see this as a way that the First and Last Man is
periodically rebooted into current cultural values.
