Vernon took over from Lawrence Olivier when he was
discovered by pagan Bedu tribes in their quest to
protect their tribal gods.

Vernon actually was a high-level avatar of the
Pilgrim. He engineered the off-course direction of the
plane to sacrifice the crew to destabilise the Flying
Woman and usurp her position from the Clergy.

It didn't quite work out like that and he was forced
to kill the surviving crew to complete the ritual.
