In the real world? Math works whether you understand it or not, whether you
believe it or not, and it works the same for everyone. Magic doesn't.
In a game world? The general public believes in math, has ready access to
mathematical experts, and can learn math given sufficient time/effort/xp.
Magic is unreliable in the presence of competing beliefs, expert magical
assistance is generally inaccessible to the public, and magic may be
entirely unusable to normals, no matter how badly they want to use it or how
hard they believe.
For the average *PC*? You don't have to betray a loved one or throw
yourself in front of a bus to balance your checkbook, nor will a cabal of
magical assassins try to ice you for measuring your carpet.
