He was an avatar of the Explorer, not the Scholar, formerly known as "The 
Great White Hunter". The current Explorer is however a staid, studious type, 
and saw Irwin as a threat, unfortunatly it wasn't until Irwin entered the 
domain of the ascended Explorer, Jacques Cousteau, that the Explorer could 
take measures.

That's the story for you guys that think he's dead. However he's already 
caused a paradigm shift in what we expect naturalists to be like, and that 
is entertaining and vibrant, see also Ms. Adventure and Jeff Corwin. He 
already changed the explorer archetype. Not everbody gets lifted bodily into 
the statosphere, some people have to die to do it.
