Hello, everybody.
I have been listening to BBC Documentaries podcasts and I have found
the Hijras ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/documentary_archive/6386171.stm
), who describe themselves as 'transgender'.
They are around one million of people and, citing wikipedia (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hijra_(South_Asia) ):
"In the culture of the Indian subcontinent a hijra (also known by a
number of different names and romanized spellings) is usually
considered a member of "the third sex" — neither man nor woman. Most
are physically male or intersex, but some are female. Hijras usually
refer to themselves as female at the language level, and usually dress
as women."
"A third gender has existed in the subcontinent from the earliest
records, and was clearly acknowledged in Vedic culture, throughout the
history of Hinduism, as well as in the royal courts of Islamic
rulers."
Also there is a pyramid organization around gurus who can collect
money and magic? from the acolytes.
It is not "postmodern" in UA sense but I think is already very
powerful to have about a million of possible Mystic Hermaphrodite
avatars together.
Ciao.
