Hah! Yeah, that's mine -- or more specifically, Mark Carlsson's.
He's a buddy of mine who was commenting on a crime that was recently
solved... can't remember where though. Anyhow, this woman was
murdered in the street by a complete stranger, and as the police
investigated they said, "Well, there's an ATM right over there.
Let's check its camera and see if the perp got caught on it. Oh, and
there's probably a camera at that convenience store. And the gas
station. Mm, and that post office over there..." Sure enough, they
pieced together a long string of camera captures showing her getting
off the bus, and a man following her on foot for over a mile before
killing her.
The pair of them were caught on something like sixty cameras in that
time. As Mark commented, "This is scary on a couple levels. One is,
obviously, that crazy men are out there killing women for no reason.
But the other is just the degree of surveillance that has developed
without anyone really complaining or even noticing."
