And yet the Puritans?  Horny bastids.  No really, if you go by the  
historical record (such as the fact that a large percentage of  
recorded births were out of wedlock, evidence that it was considered  
polite to let a guest sleep with your daughter [privileges not  
assumed to be included, but, y'know, stuff goes on], and an apparent  
'try before you buy' attitude on marital sex), their supposed  
uptightness seems to be as much of a historical myth as George  
Washington's cherry tree.
