I always thought the violent reaction to sex in theater and blase attitude
toward violence (as seen in South Park: Longer, Thicker, and Uncut) stemmed
from the perception that vice is something that the average person could see
themselves and their children actually doing while violence was something
they could not see themselves or their children doing. Therefore, vice in
films (sex, drugs, smoking, drinking) were more dangerous to portray becuase
they could succesfully encourage people to engage in a dangerous activity
that they might actually want to do, while the violence was not something
they thought they or their kids would want to do, no matter how attractive
it seemed in the films, and therefore was ok to show.
Of course, a more left-leaning take on the issue is exactly the opposite.
Also, violence is often considered noble while vice rarely is. And
considering that 'nobles' were 'those who fight' in feudal times, that means
violence = nobility. So the idea that certain violent archtypes are trying
to influence the collective paradigm makes sense.
