With economic policy effectively homogonized between Democrats and
Republicans, voting blocks seem to differentiate themselves on social
issues... and by social issues, I mean gay marriage and abortion.
This seems mostly motivated by religious conservatives.

Although, upon reflection, this is getting away from the Midwest in particular.
