People can often trace their lineage to one of these
groups, there's often a strong local community
centered on that group, and it's reinforced fairly
strongly to take pride in America's "melting pot" of
cultures and backgrounds. Just like any national or
ethnic pride, this can be taken to extremes, but that
really seems to be the basis of it - identification of
community.
Much of the small and big-mindedness described in the
thread touches on the homogeneousness of parts of the
country, but in certain communities and especially in
the larger cities, you'll find this interesting mix of
people ranging from fresh-of-boaters, to others who
have simply inherited their interest and pride from
generations of family tradition.
Kinda like the rest of the world.
