Probably because America was founded on the spirit of "Screw you, 
England, we'll leave if we want to."  Thus, rebellion is inherently 
American. :)

And Maryland is... complicated. Geographically Southern, politically 
Northern, culturally mixed. Consider it the Demilitarized Zone.
