Huh.  I remember the last time I was in Europe, being told that I was  
obviously American before I'd even said a word.  "How did you know?"  
I asked.  "Your shoes," the speaker said, indicating my tennis  
shoes.  "No European native would wear those outside of a track meet."

Don't know if it's still true, or even if it was true then.
