He was trying to wrangle influence within the
mainstream. It was purely ritual and symbolic. It
would not have violated his archetype - the Grail 
King is always refused acknowledgement by the Knight
Errant. 

This is not new; Peter disavowed Jesus three times
before the cock crowed.
