But essentially wouldn't this mean that neither could ascend because
by doing so they shatter their friend's dream, thereby violating taboo
(or is that part of the taboo?)?

This makes me wonder:

How many new types of Avatars have gotten a start, but have
subsequently been weeded out of existence due to some self-destructive
quirk of their nature.  Something along the lines of "Ascending
violates taboo".
