I've been thinking of buying one of those "How to live in America"
books, but can anyone else suggest good resources?


i recommend "reverse engineering"

go to the website of a US military base in your area. they have a section
for soldiers that get transferred to that particular garrison, something like
http://www.stuttgart.army.mil/sites/newcomers
there are lenghty explanations what will be different to living in  CONUS.
so you can get a feeling for the various alienations of foreign cultures and can deduce how the american apple pie way should feel.
