Ok, this made me think of something that happened a while back.

When I was living in Tokyo, I met up with a wide variety of people.
In the event I'm thinking of, there was a HR Headhunter, a DJ, an
English teacher and myself ( US Navy ).

We were discussing our favorite spots around town, and our perceptions
of the city itself.

The english teacher and the headhunter were uniformly bored with the
city. They cited a lack of nightlife. Myself and the DJ pointed to
the abundant club scene; I threw in a few blues clubs while the DJ
knew of some good after hours joints. Neither the english teacher nor
the headhunter knew any of these places existed, although they did
"hear of a few places".

Conversely, the english teacher and the headhunter knew much more
about restraunts... including some very nice Indian places, than the
rest of us did.

They were also under the impression that Tokyo was a uniformly safe
area, while the DJ and myself had seen a few places where things had
gotten out of hand.

The point of all this is that perception of place is a relative thing.
I remember this conversation after all these years because it struck
me that it was if all of us were living in different cities, even
though we used the same subway, went to the same neighborhoods, etc. .
