Thanks, everyone. I've been offline a few days (a minor family problem which had a higher level of priority) but I'm glad to see all this input, especially the appearance of Eris, who I thought everyone had overstepped for the big hitters.
I'm re-reading American Gods at the moment (not American Goda as I just mistyped, although that sounds like a book worth reading), and seeing the whole old god against new god thing going on. I'm not envisaging anything quite like that, particularly as lots of people don't have much faith in the system and various bits of technology that tend to screw up when you really don't need them to.
I've got to check around various other sites to collate the info, then I'll try to make a big list of gods to see how well they rate against each other. Once that's done I'll mail it to the list and develop the ideas further witht the main contenders in mind...
Thanks, all, again!

Having played in American Gods/UA-flavoured waters myself, let me add a few
Western New Gods as I saw them:
- The Administration: More a hive mind than a single entity - a collection
of faceless (literally) drones who do the dirty work (and paperwork) of the
New Gods. They can look like any Generic Authority Figure to "normal"
people: cops, doctors and auditors (just for Pratchett) are obvious
favourites, anyone whose power comes comes from representing the system.
Of course, scatter enough litter around your hideout, and they'll have pick
up every piece before they can kick your door down.
- Consumption: Big, fat and generally loathsome. I don't need to describe
him, because you can probably imagine him without even trying. If you really
can't, then take the average Jerry Springer/Ricki Lake audience and squash
them together into one really big lump of lard and give it a bucket of fried
chicken. Also doubles as the New God of Pollution - wherever he walks turns
to cracked concrete, and he can turn a river to sludge by spitting in it.
- Sex, the concubine of the King: Second-in-command of the New Gods,
shallow, spiteful and stunning. She's no longer really about the act itself,
instead she's focused on implicit promise of the modern air-brushed images
of models and "glamour people". She's every girl in a bikini posing next to
a new car. And don't get her started on "that dried-up tramp Aphrodite."
- And the Man Himself, the King of the New Gods: Success. People sacrifice
their health, their marriages and their entire lives to him. When you're in
his favour, everything you touch turns to dollars. When you fall out of
favour (and you always do), you're even worse than dead - you're a nobody.
