You're looking too far into the mainstream, I think. How about Cosplay? There's folks dressed as Gandalf, kids who believe they're Power Rangers. The infamous Man-Fae. There's definitely a precedent.

Question is, when a person is trying to be like Rocky, are they an Iconomancer, a variant there-of, or are they an Avatar channeling the Underdog?
King Arthur? The person or The True King? Hannibal Lector, The Dark Stalker? Sherlock Holmes, The Great Detective.
If they are really adepts, I would make them something other than Iconomancers. I would give them a school. It's one thing to live your life dressing like Elvis, and collecting Elvis memorabilia, yeah you are weird, but 'ecentric', but if you are living you like as 'Rocky Balboa', you are one step farther away from grounded reality, and people are going to treat you as such. The world is full of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe impersonators, but how many people live out their days as Robin of Locksley?

Don't forget major charges. A videomancer or bibliomancer could bring a fictional character to life, potentially retroactively.
Try not to look too surprised when you wake up one morning and find your iconomancer boyfriend chanelling Bruce Wayne.
