You raise some interesting points, and that's an area worth exploring.
 However, I wouldn't dismiss some more mainstream cultural references.

Is the Adept / Avatar searching for a representation of a deeper
meaning, or are they obsessively mimicking the character in question?

As an example, if an adept took the time to locate victims who
offended their cultural sensibilities and killed them reminiscent of
medieval drawings, then that adept might be a thanatomancer ( provided
they met the other qualifications of course ) even if they bore a
resemblence to Hannibal Lector.

On the other hand, if an adept became a gourmet chef, learned to play
the clavier and would only drive either a Jaguar or a pick up truck
with a vice on the end in addition to occasionally killing and
partially eating those they considered rude, then I'd say they're the
iconomancer variant attempting to channel Hannibal Lector.

Put simply, are they obsessed with the "mask", or with what's behind the "mask"?
