Ever read John Dies at the End? (www.johndiesattheend.com) It has a
few "missing time" scenarios like that. Here's a quick adaptation:
You walk up the stairs and into your bedroom, and immediately you
realize something is wrong. The drawer on your nightstand is open.
The drawer where you keep the hollowed-out book which holds your gun.
The book itself is on your bed. It's empty. Nothing else in the room
is disturbed. Slowly, you check under the bed, in the closet, move
all throughout the house, listening for an intruder, looking for some
sign of someone else in your house.
A droplet of ice water runs from your hair and into your ear. You
reach up to brush it back, and suck in a shocked breath. You've found
your pistol. It's in your hand, numb fingers curled around the
plastic grip, index finger resting on the trigger.
You drop the gun like it's made of bees, staring stupified at your
empty palm, fingers pink from the cold. You realize there's snow in
your hair, slush in your shoes, yet you were only outside for a
moment, crossing the distance between your car and the front door.
Hand shaking, you reach down to pick up the gun, almost afraid to
check the magazine. That gun carried fifteen bullets. What if
there's one missing?
