I don't have the book with me but this seems a pretty good example of a
cliomancer spell. A Mayor in Arkansas 'suddenly remembers' that he has been
captured by Satanists and brainwashed 30 years ago.
As well as being a possible flag for Sleepers, or just about anyone out to
track down Clio's the names are pretty interesting
The town is called 'Centerton'. The rumour in UA about a place that is in
the history books but everyone forgets about after they've been there came
to mind when I read that. What is Centerton the centre of and what had the
Mayor discovered or been part of that lead a cliomancer to implant false
memories. Is it a case of having the name in plain sight?
The man's 'previous life' was as a preacher called Don LaRose. Although the
Cecilians are Catholic there may be other religious groups who are at least
partially clued in, particularly post 60's with the renewal of real magic.
Maybe he really did find some Satanists with a little bit of juice and for
whatever reason the magic has slipped. Now he's back on the trail 30 years
later - his old contacts are dead or have laid down their arms but for him
its as fresh as yesterday now his memory has come back. Of course perhaps
the Satanists' magic hasn't failed and his real original identity is still
out there but a Clio has given him this other false one to get him back on
track.
And of course LaRose is a name redolent with symbolism - love, innocence and
grace and of course as a preacher there's a link with the 5 wounds of
Christ.
Have only had a brief look at the guy's own website (http://donlarose.com/)
but he 'disappeared' on election day in 1975 - perhaps his memory was a
ritual sacrifice to ensure someones success or failure? Although I thought
1976 was the presidential election? Who was elected in 1975? Anyway his
father's name was Adam LaRose
