Well, it's got the basic problem that the Loyal Labourer has, you
can't really have anyone who stands out in history who'd be a good
example of someone who fades into the background. They are by
definition annonymous and unexceptional.
A good modern example would be the UFO abductee. Surely some really
did encounter something paranormal (Even if it wasn't butt-probing
aliens) but, since no-one will believe them they remain in the
background.
Similarly, there are those who've run into bizzare creatures or
mystically empowered maniacs and don't really feel the need to run to
the newspapers, maybe because they're too cautious or because they
don't want the complications. (Imagine if your face was on the front
of some tabloid with "I got butt-probed on my honeymoon!")
In part, it's a minor proto-archetype, which explains why Mitch needs
a once-in-a-millenium event to boost himself into heaven. The fact
that the event itself embodies what his archetype is all about
probably helps.
Just as my own question, where does the term "Holy Prole" originate?
I've only seen it in connection to UA.
