The Golden Bough by Sir James Frazer. Frazer gets a
little overboard that all religion, myth and magic is
all about the surrogate fertility between plants and
people.
But, he does mention that ancient priests would wear
women's clothing when performing 'midwifing' rituals
on mines and cornfields to 'trick' the land into
delivering up the goods. Frazer insists modern priests
are actually wearing dresses not robes and vestments
(an idea which I still love).
But I'd recommend going with that Grant Morrison Doom
Patrol idea.
