The real story is the gecko. It's the man's roommate.
The roommate was the videomancer. The dead guy just
likes snakes. The roommate was obsessed with Friends,
before he died under mysterious circumstances.

The dead guy got some failed notches when he came home
and found his roommate dead, watching his corpse burn
into ash/speedily rot away/bugs devouring it.

He knew something/someone was coming for him. He left
instructions for his roommate for a ritual to send his
spirit into a department story dummy. Only the
roommate botching the ritual sent the roommates spirit
screaming into the gecko.

The dead guy kept his roommates death secret, finally
a couple of weeks ago putting an end to the charade by
claiming he moved out in the middle of the night.

The roommates consciousness has quickly been
diminishing. He had been trying to tell his roommate
what happened, how to fix him, get revenge, whatever.
But the only points of reference he's able to convey
(maybe by walking on the tv guide?) are tv shows. The
notebooks are of episodes of tv shows the roommate
directed him to watch, and the dead guy's attempt to
make sense of what happened/who killed his
roommate/how to fix him.

The guy's death was an accident as he tried to inact
another ritual he thought he had deciphered from his
roommates episode "suggestions".

There's really nothing else of note that leads
anywhere in the apartment. The real weird stuff is in
the storage unit in the basement.
