Hmmm. Ok, a lot of this is going to depend on what role the Comte
plays in your UA-verse.

Somehow, I've got the idea that the Comte oversees Ascentions to the
invisible clergy. Without reference material at hand, I don't know if
that thought is in cannon or a result of delusions brought on by
hyper-caffination, but it's there so I'm going with it. Why not.

Running with your idea, let's say that in 1961 some cabal figured out
the world was ending one Ascention at a time. They decide to save the
world ( i.e. prevent the reset when all 333 seats in the clergy are
filled ) and trap the Comte in room 10 using a big honkin ritual.

There's a side effect. Since the Comte oversees Ascentions, there are
No new Ascentions. None. Nada. Zip. The Clergy is frozen in place,
and humanity is as well. New interpretations of the archtypes simply
don't take hold, and are repleaced with the existing view on the
archtype. New archtypes don't have a chance, and old archtypes never
leave. Society is frozen.

That would SUCK if you wanted to Ascend.

So, perhaps that's what Eddie McCleister was doing. He ( or someone
he was working for ) wanted to Ascend. Maybe the Messenger didn't
like being a 50's era reporter with a press card tucked into his
fedora forever. Who knows.

It kinda worked. The Comte is free ( and likely still pissed ), but
the ritual that kept the Compte in check had a LOT of juice; when it
blew, that knocked the room, the objects, and Eddie completely out of
the world we know... but didn't knock them into any other world. To
one degree or another, they're all saturated with whatever exists
between worlds.

The players then would have a choice... sure, they can save the world
( i.e. recreate the ritual used to trap the Comte via the Objects and
Room 10 ) but the world will Always be the same.
