He'd do it because he's crazy.  Simple answer, but effective.  Maybe they're the thanatomancer's own recently-dead children, and he's not handling the loss well.  Or, more frighteningly, his children died years ago, and he's trying to replace them.  Or he's just decided to start a family, the best way he knows how.
