Hmmm... if it was an avatar, I'd say there was a paradigm shift away
from "priest performs human sacrifice" to "serial killer".
Might even be some leverage in exploring the serial killer as the
ultimate form of individual empowerment and defiance of authority.
But I digress; I agree that thanatomancers could use an update.
Things I like about thanatomancers:
* Levels of power based on the victim ( human or animal ).
* Storing magic points as "fetishes"; parts harvested from the victims.
Things I don't like about thanatomancers:
* Elaborate rituals to worship death. From what I've read, most
serial killers are more about self gratification rather than
worshiping death as a concept. Death is a means to an end, not the
end itself. Ritualized behavior is still worthwhile, however.
* Allowing extra charges for willing victims. Seems to play up the
"evil necromancer" feel, which as Chris pointed out is something to
get away from.
Anyone else care to chime in?
