You could make them Revnants instead of demons. Since "People in need
abused by those who are supposed to help them" is a common thread
there you could make them all the same type. Though you'd probably
need to design a new kind of revnant for the game.

Haven't seen the film myself mind, so I don't know what to suggest.

Since you mention haunted asylums, you might want to also check out
"Thief 3: Deadly Shadows."

There's a level set in a building which used to be an orphanage.
Then they converted a wing to become an asylum (where the doctors
experimented on the patients) while cramming all the orphans into the
other wing.
Then it burned down.
Now it's haunted by an orphan (killed by an unrelated supernatural
entity) and patrolled insane unkillable zombies.

Fun place to visit.

One of my favourite levels in any game of all time.
