I can't give you a proper citation, but stories in that vein are pretty
common in News of the Weird. Well-intentioned but borderline (or
not-so-borderline) crazies want to be one of the good guys so badly that
they impersonate doctors, traffic cops, fire marshals, what have you.
Sometimes they try to go through normal channels first and fall back on
the E-Z-homestudy method in frustration, other times they just figure,
"Hey, why go through all that hassle? I know how to direct traffic
already."
In a similar vein, a surprising number of vehicle thefts are not
intended for profit, but simply a case of succumbing to the irresistible
lure of a once-in-a-lifetime chance to drive a really sweet hot rod that
someone left unattended. Or an eighteen-wheeler. Or a train engine.
Or a cement truck. Or a Zamboni. If you drive an unusual vehicle, do
NOT leave the keys in the ignition. I'm particularly fond of the guy
who took a joyride on a steamroller. The cops couldn't stop him with
barricades, so they pursued him down the highway at 10mph, waiting for
him to run out of gas.
