In a similar vein, a surprising number of vehicle thefts are not intended for profit, but simply a case of succumbing to the irresistible lure of a once-in-a-lifetime chance to drive a really sweet hot rod that someone left unattended. Or an eighteen-wheeler. Or a train engine. Or a cement truck. Or a Zamboni. If you drive an unusual vehicle, do NOT leave the keys in the ignition. been there, done that (well, i had to google zamboni. another challenge waiting!). sometimes i actually got a t-shirt. helps to work for the federal occupational safety administration: i´m pretty much expected to toy around with heavy machinery.
and i´ve got a Bosch E30 key to rule them all (at least most build well into the ´90s)
there´s a fair number of BOS (Behörden und Organisationen mit Sicherheitsaufgaben: roughly translates as emergency services) and medical imposters/ impersonators in germany, or regular insiders that go way to far.
few make the news. most are swept under the rug for various reasons.
many of them are what we call "blaulichtgeil" [(sexually?) aroused by displaying signs of authority on the ultimate german penis lenght surrogate, the car], spending amazing sums of money to turn their private cars into driving lightshows.
e.g. this one was build for a real medical doctor employed by a car factory, who likes to help others in his free time

(he agreed to display it on some fairs, so he got it cheaper)
