I second the grant Morrison - Invisibles may be the closest thing to UA ive
ever read in a comic, and his other titles if you can get them

Gaiman's Sandman has some elements particly in the avatar department

And I second the watchmen- great for getting interesting characters who
aren't stereotyped heroes or succeed like stereotyped heroes

Phonogram, by Kieron Gillen, could barely be more UA if it tried: it's
about adepts searching for magical power in pop music, and one in
particular facing down a powerful avatar in a battle over the true meaning
of Britpop.

And, as everyone's recommending Grant Morrison titles, I'd be remiss not
to mention The Filth. It's dripping with weird characters and symbolism.

In addition to the many fine Warren Ellis titles that Kevin recommended,
I'd also suggest Desolation Jones. It deals with a hidden subculture of
very weird former spies, exiled to Los Angeles.
